"Turning Pages: Overcoming Book Abandonment and Finding Wisdom"

ree

I have always had this thing where I start a book and never finish it. I like to read, but somewhere between running a business and becoming a mom, it drifted lower on the list of priorities.

Most of the time Im intrigued by a book,I buy it, read 20-50 pages and then it gets lost under my bed, in the depths of my workbag or rolls under the seat of my car not to be found for months.

My growing frustration with this was, I genuinely wanted to gain value and learn lessons from these books. I wanted to slow down, find a cozy corner of my couch and cuddle up with a book. So I figured if I wanted to learn, I had to shift something inside of my mind and change my bad habit.

I first decoded the two main reasons this happens to me in the first place.

#1- I’m drawn to reading self development books, who’s subject matter is often complex and requires an equal amount of work to the reading itself.

#2- It’s my personality type to start something I'm interested in only to be distracted and quickly move onto the next. (Manifesting Generator over here, if you speak human design..)

Feeling frustrated with my lack of follow through I decided this past summer that I would find a way to commit to finishing any book I start. On my annual vacation to Tahoe I prioritized reading with the intention of finishing an entire book in that 10 day time frame.

I'm proud to say I did just that! It reminded me of how much I enjoy reading and that I in fact, CAN finish a book! So I made a new commitment when I got home to continue making reading a priority and a part of my daily routine.

Here we are 5 months later and I just finished my 4th book!

One of my major downfalls leading up to this commitment was only carving out time before bed.

After a day of momming, working, housekeeping and taking care of clients, my brain is mush by 8pm- not a great time to engage in any mentally stimulating concepts and conversation.

Realizing that I would never read, let alone retain the valuable information in said books, I shifted my reading time to the morning with my coffee and during my sons nap time. Once a day, I make it a priority to carve out time with my book.

Another shift I made for myself has been to only read 10 pages or 1 chapter at a time. Sometimes I don’t even get that far, but a few pages here and there eventually add up to the whole dang book!

As a grown woman, reading a book shouldn’t be such an amazing accomplishment, but for me, overcoming the resistance and follow through to finishing a book at all is a really big win!

In each of the books I’ve finished so far have held some amazing value, mindset shifts and lessons that are helping me move through this season of my life and business. I wanted to share them with you and a tiny nugget of wisdom I drew from each, so here we go:

Letting Go by David R Hawkins MD - Energetically the experiences we have and the feelings associated with them stay with us through our life. By becoming aware of your feelings as they happen and recognizing them for what they are is the quickest path to release and moving forward without the weight of your past and the emotions associated with it.

Think like a Monk by Jay Shetty- Our minds are an endless stream of hypothetical thoughts, fears and stories- Learning to quiet the chatter inside of ourselves and be still is a lifelong practice and the only way to find inner peace and happiness.

The Gap & The Gain by Dan Sullivan- Your perception of everything you experience determines the outcome of your life. Even in tragedy there is a lesson and value to be found, one that will make you more resilient and aware of the beauty of life in any situation. Look for what you can gain, not what you are lacking.

The Karma of Success by Liz Tran- The greatest work you can do in the world, to create the most success, is to take care of yourself and prioritize being happy.

In wrapping up, each of these books delved into the realm of mindset—a topic I'm passionate about. The insights I've gained have not only helped me navigate this season of my life and business but have also allowed me to serve others more effectively.

If you're resonating with this, I believe you'd enjoy these reads too! And hey, why not turn this into a shared experience? Let's start a book club!

Monthly Zoom calls with a glass of wine in hand, discussing how these books have shifted our perspectives… could be fun and expansive!

If this sounds like a plan to you, drop a comment or share your favorite books for more recommendations!
